2008 Pew Playwriting Fellow Ed Shockley has enjoyed a thirty-year career on the boards that includes numerous critically acclaimed works for adults. He also writes prolifically for—and earns the largest portion of his income from—work for young actors and audiences. This eight-week course will explore the classic elements of playcraft and the challenge of creating rich and thrilling experiences for young audiences. Through in-class exercises and out-of-class projects, participants will create a folio of works for young audiences and young actors. The course will explore practical examples detailing how to build an income-generating career as a professional dramatist.

Ed Shockley is the award-winning author of more than seventy plays. He has made box office records with BOBOS (co-authored with James McBride) and BESSIE SMITH:EMPRESS OF THE BLUES and enjoyed national success with the stage adaptations of Mildred D. Taylor's ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY, STRANGER ON THE BUS, and THE LIARS CONTEST. His film STONE MANSION has won numerous awards worldwide and been broadcast on Showtime and PBS. He is author of NOTES FROM A PRACTICING WRITER (Hopewell Publications) and has served on the faculty of several universities. He is the artistic director of Mosaic Theatre Productions and co-founder of the internet play publishing company Youthplays.com. Commissions from companies like Seattle Children's Theatre and Children's Theatre of Charlotte, and royalties from published manuscripts at Youthplays.com, account for the finances that allow him to be a full-time playwright.
