
Rayne
Playwright, Foundry Member, Foundry Class of 2028
Also known as Angela Bey, Rayne is a theatremaker from Southwest Philadelphia. They tell stories of transformation that center Black folx.
Named “one of 18 young Philadelphians shaping the future of the city’s creative class” by PhillyVoice, Rayne has also been featured in Grid Magazine, Philadelphia Gay News, Token Theatre Friends, NPR, WHYY, and more.
Rayne’s plays have been developed through numerous theaters and arts organizations, including Azuka Theatre, Primary Stages, Directors Gathering, Shakespeare in Clark Park, The Gumbo Lab, The Strides Collective, PlayPenn, Theatre Exile, the Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival, the Painted Bride, Shoe Box Theatre Collective, New Manifest Theatre, and Christ Church Preservation Trust. They are a member of The Foundry at PlayPenn and New Pages at Azuka Theatre. Rayne's work has also been supported by the Leeway Foundation, Independence Foundation, Lambda Literary, the National Endowment of the Arts, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.
Produced works include On Buried Ground (Fringies Honorable Mention), COMET (Barrymore Award Winner), The White Feather Project, WHISPER, Staying Power, Finding Freedom: Deborah’s Choice, Com[promising] Future, A Soft Landing, Pedestals, and Germantown Plays Pericles and Every Everyman.
Upcoming projects include IFYOULIKEITILOVEIT!, MASC., new heaven, new earth, Ever: a play with music with Zachariah Julian, and an immersive work commissioned by The Ministry of Awe. Rayne is also collaborating with Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities on a new play.
Rayne is the founder of Upstream Performance Collaborative, a scrappy, Philly-based theatre collective that specializes in boundary-breaking new works by emerging, underrepresented artists.
