Advanced Playwriting Workshop (F26)

Class Description

Instructor: L M Feldman Semester: Fall 2026 (Mondays) Session: 10 Online Sessions New Students: $600 Returning PlayPenn or DGI Students: $525 Foundry & Entrepreneur Members: $480 DGI Certificate Students: $480 Advanced Playwriting Workshop: Read, Write, Delve, Expand This 10-week course is intended for playwrights who have already written at least one full-length play and are ready to work with greater appetite, intentionality, and independence. Come with something you're hungry to explore, expand, understand, or make: you might be beginning a new play, deep in a first draft, or ready to get down and dirty with a rewrite. You needn't commit to a single project; each week's craft focus can applied wherever it might be most useful. Each class will introduce a different craft tool, prompt, or area of inquiry, followed by substantial in-class writing and full-group discussion and reflection. This is a workshop for generating pages not for formally workshopping or critiquing your work. Between classes, participants will read a play of their own choosing and bring back what most struck, surprised, or inspired them and what they might steal, borrow, or translate into their own practice. The curriculum will responsive to the groups's evolving appetites, needs, and discoveries. L M FELDMAN is a queer, feminist, GNC playwright who makes theatrically adventurous, ensemble-driven plays that bend space, weave time, and queer form. Their body of work is known for being (simultaneously) intimate & epic, political & poetic, and always physically kinetic. Their plays include: ANOTHER KIND OF SILENCE (City Theater Company, VORTEX Rep); THRIVE, OR WHAT YOU WILL (American Shakespeare Center); GRACE, OR THE ART OF CLIMBING (Denver Center); S P A C E (Central Square Theater); HAND FOOT HAND (Beyond the Realm); SCRIBE, OR THE SISTERS MILTON, OR ELEGY FOR THE UNWRITTEN (The Distillery Festival); LIMBER, A LOVE STORY (Emerson Stage); THE EGG-LAYERS (New Georges/Barnard College); A PEOPLE (Orbiter 3); a TYA stage adaptation of TROPICAL SECRETS by Margarita Engle (Theater J); as well as a half-dozen ensemble-devised works. L has been a Venturous Playwright Fellow, a Core Writer at the Playwrights’ Center, as well as a fellow at MacDowell, The Playwrights Realm, New Georges, InterAct Theatre, The Dramatists Guild Foundation, and Shakespeare’s New Contemporaries; and a member of Orbiter 3. Based in Philadelphia, L is also an educator, mentor, circus artist, & dramaturg.
