Script Rewrite Lab

This Class is Sold Out

Learn to revise with clarity, confidence, creative direction, and captivate your audience.

Class Description

Instructor: Andrea Lepcio (Playwright) Former DGI Title: Core Skills (Rewrites) They say writing is rewriting. Andrea has discovered they are right. The key is problem solving. We can't just rewrite to make our play or musical better. We can go back in with a specific set of problems and make progress. This class will be dedicated to the second or tenth draft. We will explore methods of analysis, inspiration, craft, and stamina to feed the next draft. Through exercises, and discussion of all aspects of production, and workshopping, we will find our ways into our scripts and examine the myriad ways we can make them stronger. Requirements for this Class: Students should come in with at least a draft of a script they're ready to revise. Your calendar should be clear to commit to attend each session for maximum output. This class isn't for workshopping an incomplete play; you should already have a sense of the story you want to tell and the flexibility to make changes. Because this is a class on rewriting, it is ideal if we are all familiar with each other's scripts. Each student will be asked to post their script to our Google Drive before Week One. We each (Andrea included) will be required to read the plays prior to workshopping. Andrea will email students prior to the start of class to set a workshop and reading schedule. Expectations for this Class: The hope is to emphasize discussion and exercises the first two weeks of the class, and the last four sessions will be for workshopping what you've learned. Students should be ready to generate ten new pages a week (or more); commit to attend every session; participate in class discussions; build community with your fellow writers. After Completion of Class: Students should have a new draft of a script ready for a reading or workshop.
