Playwrights may apply via the application link on the PlayPenn website on our Program Applications webpage between August 8 and August 17. Only the first 100 applications will be considered.
The Playwrights Cohort at PlayPenn, now in its third year, will once again be open to emerging playwrights currently based in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and D.C. The Playwrights Cohort at PlayPenn is a free year-long professional development program that helps emerging playwrights build sustainable careers by understanding the business of theatre.
Santiago Iacinti, Associate Artistic Director and Director of Education at PlayPenn, says, “Our goal is for playwrights, as owners of their intellectual property, to leave the Cohort more business savvy and ready to navigate their career, aware of their rights and responsibilities. In just two years, we have served 60 playwrights. Writers who identify as multi-hyphenates are welcome. We are seeking self-starters who will consistently show up. PlayPenn is here as a resource, but this opportunity is truly what each playwright makes of it.”
The third cycle of The Playwrights Cohort will run October 2025 - August 2026. Sessions will be held once a month for approximately two hours. This hybrid program will hold both Zoom meetings and in-person gatherings in Philadelphia. Every month, industry professionals will engage Cohort members on subjects such as entertainment law, building a portfolio, finding representation, having agency in the rehearsal room, managing personal finances, and more. Participation in the program is free of charge.
Jeffrey James Keyes Patton, a Cohort alumnus, shared his experience: “PlayPenn has done a remarkable job of creating a program that sees, and meets local playwrights as a whole person. I'm stepping out of the Cohort armed with a variety of new tools and a sense of clarity and confidence. I'm grateful to PlayPenn and all of the participants in the Cohort for facilitating not only a dynamic program but also bringing together a community of like-minded artists. ”
