Class Description

Instructor: Arianna Rose (Playwright) Semester: Fall 2025 10-Week Session Ten-minute play festivals continue to grow in popularity around the world, with readings, productions, and publications at every level of theatre. While short-form plays share some similarities with full-length storytelling, the dramatists who excel in this form have learned how to write into the differences. This class can help you join their ranks and give you the tools to write to the highest level of craft. This ten-session course is a combination of lecture, reading, writing prompts, discussion, and most importantly, in-class sharing of your work for feedback. Whether you’re a new or seasoned dramatist, Writing The Ten-Minute Play will assist you in your daily artistic practice. Topics will include the elements of a successful ten-minute play, dramatic structure, generating ideas, character development, giving and receiving constructive feedback, effective rewrites, formatting your play, submissions, and log-keeping. Week 1: What is a Ten-Minute Play? Week 2: Dramatic Structure of a Ten-Minute Play – Part One and Giving and Receiving Feedback; the Liz Lerman Critical Response Model Week 3: Dramatic Structure of a Ten-Minute Play – Part Two and The Role of Stage Directions in Your Ten-Minute Play Week 4: Dramatic Structure of a Ten-Minute Play – Part Three Week 5: Theatricality in Your Ten-Minute Play Week 6: The Real Person in Your Ten-Minute Play / Personal Narrative Week 7: Promotion & Marketing of the Ten-Minute Play Week 8: Bookkeeping: Tracking Submissions and Productions Week 9: The Dramatists’ Bill of Rights / Best Practices: Plays and Festivals; Playwright Protocol at Rehearsals and Productions Week 10: Marketing: Website, New Play Exchange; Protecting Your Ten-Minute Play via Copyright Arianna Rose is an award-winning Playwright, Musical Theatre Writer, Director, Dramaturg and Educator. Her plays and musicals have been presented in thirty-seven states, Washington D.C., and internationally in England, Scotland, Canada, Germany, Israel, Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea, and UAE.

SCHEDULE & TIME ZONES: All of our classes are delivered online and open to participants worldwide. Our website automatically displays class start times based on your device’s current location, so you will always see the correct time no matter where you are. If you are traveling for work or personal reasons, please verify the local time shown on your device on this registration page before joining the class For example, if a class begins at 7:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time (ET), it will appear as 4:00 PM PT when viewed from the U.S. West Coast, or 11:00 AM the next day if you are in Sydney, Australia. Many of our instructors are based in the U.S. Eastern Time (ET) zone, but not all. Once again, please double-check the local time shown on your device on this registration page before joining the class if you are traveling.
